JAY S. GEPHART joined the faculty of Purdue University in the fall of 1995 after having completed 12 years as a public school band director. In July of 2001, he was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor with tenure and in November 2006 was appointed Director of Bands. Professor Gephart serves as Director of the Purdue University Symphonic Band, coordinator of the concert band program and director of the Purdue “All-American” Marching Band.  From 1995-2006, Professor Gephart also served as Music Director of the Purdue Symphony.  In addition to his duties at Purdue University, Mr. Gephart holds the position of Artistic Administrator for the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra.

Mr. Gephart received a Master of Music Degree in Performance with High Distinction from Indiana University in 1988 and a Bachelor of Music Education Degree with Distinction from Indiana University in 1983. He taught in the public schools in Georgia, Illinois and Indiana where his ensembles received numerous honors and awards including honor band status at various concert and jazz festivals. His Purdue Symphonic Band and Symphony Orchestra have shared the stage with some of the nation's outstanding soloists and have represented Purdue at the Indiana Music Educator's Association state convention on two occasions. In March of 2006, the Purdue Symphonic Band performed a concert at Carnegie Hall as part of the New York Wind Band Festival.

Professor Gephart has served as a guest conductor, clinician, lecturer and adjudicator both nationally and internationally.  Most recently he served as guest conductor of All-State bands in Arkansas and Indiana, and All-District bands in Virginia, Kentucky, Illinois, Michigan and Texas. In 1997, he was selected to conduct the music camp honor band for the Department of Education in the Northern Region of Queensland, Australia.  In December 2005, Professor Gephart served as a clinician at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago.

In 1999, Professor Gephart established a tremendously successful program entitled "Partner's In Music Education" designed to create a collaborative relationship between Purdue Bands and a high school instrumental music program from within the state of Indiana. In 1998, Purdue University celebrated the success of a two year capital campaign, managed by Professor Gephart, entitled "A Song Anew, Tuning Up for the Future" in which Purdue Bands raised an unprecedented 2.7 million dollars. During the same year, Professor Gephart received the "New Professional Award" from the Vice President of Student Services for his outstanding work at Purdue University.

Mr. Gephart has been very active in various professional organizations including the College Band Director’s National Association, Music Educator's National Conference, the National Band Association, the Indiana Bandmaster's Association, the Indiana Music Educator's Association and Phi Beta Mu. Most recently he served as a member of the National Band Association Revelli Composition Contest committee and as President of the Indiana Bandmaster's Association.
